Monday 1st September, Mount Qua Qua, Grenada

A small expedition today, up Grenada’s second highest peak (2,720′).  You start the walk where the road from St George’s to Grenville crosses through the Grand Etang National Park.  The No 6 bus drops you there ($5EC/head from St Georges).Sept-01

The bus leaves the St George bus station, above, when they are full.  By full I mean every seat taken with the conductor sometimes sitting on one of the passengers.

Once at the Park there is a modest entrance fee of about $10EC.  The trail to the top of Mt Qua Qua is well signposted and advertised as a one and a half hour walk, and so it proved. As you climb there are tremendous views in every direction except to the north.  The initial part of the walk lifts you above the Grand Etang Crater lake (its in an old volcanic crater)…..Sept-02

and eventually reveals views of the south end of the island and a glimpse of our anchorage in Prickly Bay……Sept-03

I walked with Keith and Ida (S/V CHEERS) and we almost got to the top before the clouds and rain rolled in. Not having wet weather gear we got drenched but its the tropics and as we were soaked from sweat it didn’t really matter.  We lunched on top and then headed down to get cleaned up and enjoy a couple of ice cold beers.  The rainy season is not the best time of year for these walks being wet, humid and muddy underfoot. However, if you get a good day its reasonably cool at over 2,000′ and anyway we won’t be here in the dry season!
