January 2018

Tuesday 30th

We flew back into Auckland on the 15th having spent the previous three weeks or so in Australia visiting my cousins and their families.  There was a slightly stressful experience at the Qantas check in desk in Sydney when we where asked for our return tickets and as we didn’t have any Qantas didn’t want to let us on the flight!  Apparently New Zealand Immigration insist that travellers have evidence of departure plans (or different visas to the ones we have).  After much discussion with Qantas check in staff they eventually rang NZ Immigration in Auckland who gave their approval for us to travel, phew!  Lesson learned and we’ll make sure we get the paperwork sorted before we fly out again in May.

Having arrived in Auckland late afternoon it was too late to get a bus back to Opua so we stayed a night in an AirBnB and made a rare visit to the cinema – “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”.  This reviewer though it was outstanding and expects Oscars for Francis MacDormund and Sam Rockwell.

Whilst away we’d had an email from the Bay of Islands Marina saying that another boat had collided with Emma Louise on her mooring!  How does that happen?  Apparently it was also on a mooring and they must have been too close together and wind and/or tide brought them into contact.  There was little damage done but some annoying gouges on the gel coat and the loss of the starboard bow navigation light.  As the port one was still missing after the loss of forestay incident I wasn’t really bothered about that as I have a new pair ready to fit.

Our plan for the rest of the summer is to head down to the South Island and at least as far as the Marlborough Sounds.  After that we will leave EL on the hard for the Southern winter and fly back to the UK on 1st May to spend six months there.  On our return in November we will then set to and give the old girl a thorough refit with a view to selling her.  We have decided that after more than six years of living aboard it is time to move onto something else.  If you are interested in a much loved Aphrodite 42 then get in contact by leaving a comment at the bottom of the page.
